At Bishop Aldhelm's, our aim is for children to leave us equipped with the knowledge, understanding, and emotional resilience needed to thrive as active, positive, and successful members of today’s diverse society. We strive to instil high aspirations, self-belief, and the mindset that with determination, anything is possible. In a rapidly changing world, it is vital that children are appropriately informed about the factors that may impact their lives. We want them to develop the skills to navigate these challenges confidently, supporting their mental health and overall well-being.

Our PSHE curriculum follows the SCARF programme and is designed to build essential knowledge and skills, enabling pupils to engage fully with the wider curriculum and preparing them to be responsible global citizens—both now and in their future roles within the global community. It supports their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development, equipping them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of adult life.

Through our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), children learn how to stay safe and form healthy, respectful relationships—skills that are crucial both now and in their future lives.

Implementation

Across the school, PSHE is delivered through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work—SCARF—which aligns with the National Curriculum and meets the statutory requirements for Health Education and Relationships Education. The curriculum follows a spiral, progressive structure, designed to prepare pupils for life by helping them understand and value who they are, and how they relate to others in an ever-changing world. It places a strong emphasis on promoting positive behaviour, fostering a growth mindset, encouraging achievement, and building resilience, while also nurturing pupils' mental and physical health and overall wellbeing.

PSHE is taught through SCARF’s six half termly themes with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level):

  • Autumn 1: Me and My Relationships
  • Autumn 2: Valuing Difference
  • Spring 1: Keeping Safe
  • Spring 2: Rights and Respect
  • Summer 1: Being My Best
  • Summer 2: Growing and Changing

It also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school.

Impact

By the time our children leave our school they will:

  • Be able to approach a range of real-life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.
  • Be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
  • Appreciate difference and diversity
  • Recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
  • Be able to look after their mental health and well-being
  • Be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
